The Royal Agricultural University or RAU is a university located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, UK.

Established in 1845, it was the first agricultural college in the English-speaking world.  The university provides more than 30 land-based undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes to students from over 45 countries through the School of Agriculture, the School of Business and Entrepreneurship, and the School of Real Estate & Land Management.

Facts about the Royal Agricultural University

  • Queen Victoria granted the Royal Charter to the University in 1845.
  • Sovereigns have been patrons ever since, visiting the University in every reign. His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, became President in 1984.
  • The University motto is Avorum Cultus Pecorumque, meaning 'caring for the fields and the beasts'. The Uni continues to enact its educational, research and consultancy commitment in keeping with this motto.
  • In 2013, the Privy Council awarded the RAU full University status, in recognition of its provision as a higher education institution, and it formally changed its name to Royal Agricultural University.

Location - Cirencester

 The campus is situated one mile from the centre of the Cirencester, in the heart of the beautiful Cotswold countryside.

During term time, a free shuttle bus runs between Cirencester and the University.

London is just 90 minutes by rail.

The University is often referred to as 'the Oxbridge of the Countryside'. The main quadrangle sits alongside the 16th-century tithe barn and farmhouse, in 10 hectares (25 acres) of manicured grounds.

The University farms are based at two locations: Coates and Harnhill. Totalling 491 hectares in size (1,200 acres), they offer very different farming system situations.

Specialist labs and facilities are available alongside a well-stocked library and state-of-the-art computer suites.

All teaching materials are available to students 24/7 through the online portal.
