Career Prospects & Opportunities

Work Placements
Work placements are a very useful way of gaining relevant, professional experience and knowledge of a particular industry, as well as potential references.

Graduate recruiters often use such schemes as a means of assessing potential candidates for employment after graduation. Most large organisations and some smaller ones run placement schemes for students. These can vary in length from two-three weeks, a vacation period or up to a year.

The Prospects run National Council for Work Experience website is also an excellent place to research short and long term work placements. This site also provides a number of useful links including the Step programme, overseas placements and volunteering in the UK / abroad.

Opportunities available through the University of Westminster include:

Mentoring is a long-term relationship that meets a developmental need. A mentor facilitates personal and professional growth in an individual by sharing the knowledge and insights that have been learned through the years. Simply put, mentors are people who help others to succeed.

Our schemes are designed to widen the aspirations and enhance the personal effectiveness of students. With the help of their mentors as role models, students will build a solid foundation of skills from which to launch a variety of successful careers.

You will meet your mentor once or twice a month between October and May, usually at the mentor's workplace. The aim of both schemes is to build a mutually supportive relationship, with objectives that could include:

  • Improvement in study skills
  • Building self-confidence
  • Time management
  • Communication skills
  • Understanding of the working world
